Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain can occur in either the front or back regions of the arm at the shoulder blade.

Anatomy of the Shoulder:

The shoulder comprises four joints:

  • The meeting point of the collarbone with the breastbone.
  • The junction of the collarbone with the shoulder blade.
  • The union of the arm bone with the socket of the shoulder blade.
  • The connection of the shoulder blade with the ribs at the back.

Shoulder Muscles and Surrounding Tissues:

Shoulder Problems:

  1. Pain
  2. Limited shoulder range of motion.
  3. Reduced daily functionality.

Other potential causes to exclude are:

  1. Neck nerves
  2. Chest vertebrae
  3. Underlying diseases
  4. Body tension and work pressures.

Causes of Injury:

  • Overexertion
  • Direct injury
  • Around 60% of people experience shoulder pain in their lifetime. However, 50% of initial sufferers see their pain disappear within 8-12 weeks. The remaining percentage requires conservative intervention to reduce pain and strengthen muscles.
  • Diagnosing Shoulder Pain:
  • Rotator cuff tendon tears: Affect 20-40% of individuals without symptoms or complaints.
  • Impingement of shoulder tendons
  • Recurrent dislocation in the shoulder joint
  • Frozen shoulder: No specific scientific cause but risk factors include:
  • More common in women than men
  • Ages between 35-40 years
  • Individuals with diabetes
  • Thyroid gland underactivity or overactivity.
